The exact origins of brownies are not entirely clear, but it is believed that they were first created in the United States in the late 19th century. There are several stories about the origin of the brownie, but one of the most popular is that it was invented by a chef at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago in 1893.
According to this story, Bertha Palmer, the wife of the hotel's owner, had requested a dessert that was smaller than a piece of cake, but still cake-like, and that could be included in boxed lunches for ladies attending the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. The chef, who was named either Bertha or Fanny depending on the account, supposedly came up with the idea of a chocolate cake that was denser than a typical cake, but not quite a cookie. The resulting dessert was a hit, and became known as the "Palmer House Brownie."
Another story about the origin of the brownie is that it was created by a housewife in Bangor, Maine in the late 19th century. According to this story, the woman was making a chocolate cake, but forgot to add baking powder, resulting in a dense, fudgy dessert that her family loved. She began making the dessert regularly, and it eventually became known as the "Bangor Brownie."
Regardless of its origins, the brownie quickly became popular across the whole world, and various recipes and variations emerged. Today, there are many different types of brownies, from classic fudgy brownies to those with nuts, frosting, or other additions. Brownies are enjoyed as a dessert or a sweet snack, and are a beloved treat around the world.
